  • Just park in the garage.

  • You can keep a can of Rain-x de-icer in your trunk, very very useful 👌

  • just buy a car with normal handles and problem is solved, Musk did not take any lesson from wing doors of model x and failing handles of model s. I am tired of that a bit now...

  • Great video Björn! Thank you once more 🍀 So you would recommend to preheat the car about 40 minutes before one starts to drive? 😄

  • Great tips really interesting Bjorn thanks

  • Borrow a heat Camera and film it to see where its heat and cold.

  • Don't squirt from behind. Lol

  • Great! Thanks for the tricks like camp mode, windows, water spray.

  • Thank you again Bjørn. I was happy to see this part 2 after a (for a Tesla owner) rather depressing conclusion. My thought now after seeing this is, if we could only disable recirculation from the app. The car could them override (enable) it if it senses living creatures inside the cabin..

  • Thanks for making this great video for education 👍👍 It's really helpful for us in icy winter to handle Tesla. You are amazing !

  • Newer Model 3s don't have the rainbow roof as you already know. One of the things that I'd never want to sell my 3. Good idea to show how to defrost/deice a Model 3

  • That’s great, one question. How do you turn on recirculate when you can’t get in?

  • That's a nice car. I will get a model 3 some day!

  • It is not something Tesla designed, it's the same with other cars. The hot air escapes from the vents behind, on both sides, inside the bumper, from where it just rises up where the charging port happens to be.

  • Good job on addressing the problem! Not hatin' but almost half an hour fiddling around is kinda a pain

  • Try winter viperfluid.

  • Yes, the rain usually falls from above. 😂

  • A mini heating element, like in the wipers, in the handle is more efficient than a 7 kW heat pump only defrosting the handle.

  • Thats why Tesla is 10 years ahead! Great video! 👍

  • Still like the: Yo whats up phaa 😁

  • Wouldn’t isopropyl alcohol be able to thaw the ice quickly? The only thing I would question is if it will damage the rubber/paint/chrome/body.

  • Would be great to be able to turn on/off recirculation in the app!

  • I don't see any options to disable recirculation via the App?

  • Hi, I don't quite understand why your door and window open so nicely. In Germany we now have around -5 to -20 °, and I can't get the windows down to open, had even heated for 2 1/2 hours, but still didn't work. I've now got the tip about talc, I'll give it a try. Doesn't mean that your video is unreal, but I shake my head, heat for about 30 minutes, it doesn't work for me at least greetings Markus

  • When my M3 handles were stuck a few weeks ago, a little bit of warm water did the trick. If would be useful if the app allowed the user to open the door - the external handle just pushes an electrical switch, and then gives the user something to pull with. When you press the button for door open on the inside there is a small sprung assistance - this action would probably be enough, the external handles shouldn't be required.

  • Wow, that is one bad designed car... Never ever had any problems to get into my cars and we have up to - 30 here...

  • Tesla is unaffordable. So for average Joe it’s not the best

  • I had several frameless door cars (BMWs and now Tesla) in a cold climate. Once a year late autumn I use spray silicone on door/trunk rubbers and I never had issues with frozen doors. @Bjorn - I think you should tell that again and again as there are new people coming in that may be did not have frameless doors before.

  • 5:48 "This one I'm not even gonna try!" "Let's try this!" Haha xD Still don't like these door handles and I guess it's even worse for the Model S? Or do they have some sort of heating? Really love that Polestar kept the normal door handles. Same goes with the charge port, prefer having a manual opening. Really unnecessary having auto-opening for such thing since you anyway have to manually put the cable in the port xD

  • Serious question: would liquid de-icer work if you are in a hurry?

  • "Rain shit" hahaha! You got the true name for it there!

  • I wonder if the handles on the model S would be more of a problem?

  • “Haters will hate, but that is the fact” Bjorn Tesla

  • Half hour seems like a really long time to preheat to me. It seems like a small heat source (like a lightbulb) in the handles would use less energy and work faster. Or even better... A larger gap at the lower edge of the handles that allows water to drip free. The one place that larger gap would be better!

  • I love how this whole video was for not using recirculation then at 15:49 "Use recirculation and it works like a charm!"

  • I just imagine your nieghbor looking out the window to see you spraying the car in the middle of the night... "Wife, that crazy banana box guy is out there again!"

  • This video shows how big a pain in the ass it is to deal with a Tesla in the cold. I love mine. But yeah I've had my fair share of days that I say "screw this design"

    • Same thing happens to my Ford Fiesta. The door handles will freeze, the door will freeze, the INSIDE of the window will freeze. And I can't pre-heat my Ford. So yes, this might suck but it's a lot better than most cars! My Model 3 will be here by summertime so a lot less problems come next winter.

    • i own a honda and the same shit happens to my car. this is not exclusive to tesla, if you leave your car out in the freezing rain, it can turn into an entire sheet of ice, and you experience the same shit. and as for windows, ya those are never working when its cold out, they are frozen shut for sure, same with the gas tank. has nothing to do with teslas design

  • "Don't squirt from behind! Yea squirt from above instead!" lol

  • Even without pre-heating, if you bump it a bit harder, it will open fine :) I had to do it this way when the Easee charger at the cabin did not work at all (google it), so my car was left in -15 degrees and "freezing rain" with less then 10 % power and I could not pre-heat it.

  • Make a video with an infrared thermal camera and you may discover more!

  • Has no one here ever heard of de-icer??

  • Lol. Was just about to comment on that. Thought you lost your mind using recirculation... ;)

  • The first video wasn't a mistake, it was extra content and one other option to test =D Your findings are valuable.

  • oooh, i used recirculation last time too. had some frozen handle as well. The water and soap froze to ice before I could remove it. :D

  • You can always pee on your charging port (if it is not connected to the socket) or on your door handle to make it warm)))))

  • I had the iusse that all four windows were frozen and didn't move, although the handles were free. I remotly heated the car for 30 Minutes at full speed: All windows opended.

  • ahaha, "we don t need the backdoor!" just warm it with your hands" :D Not nice under -10 windy, gonna loose your finger tips to enter the car!

  • "...because i was expecting to squirt some more to solve the problem" "Ah, I mean, it's like pissing..... to keep yourself warm"

  • When you're squirting all over your car, but your hand gets tired so you have to switch

  • Ok, so all I would need to do to be able to get into my Tesla that's been in the elements is wait a half an hour for it to thaw itself... Great... Any other car with traditional door handles you could just give the handle a good tug and pull the door open and drive. Yeah you'll be cold, but you don't always have the luxury of of 30min to pre-heat the car before setting off. Thanks for the study Bjorn, you do good work in the EV scene, I just think Tesla's unnecessarily complicated door opening procedures (pop-out door handles and windows that must drop down to clear the frame) are gimmicky and impractical for places other than California. One of the reasons I didn't buy an M3.

    • You don’t have to wait for 30 minutes. Tap the door with a closed fist, the ice loosens and the door handles will work. I do it all the time. The tolerances are too tight leading to ice being able to jam the handles. Definitely room for improvement.

  • Sorry guys, this door handle is simply a bad design in the first place!

    • Aerodynamic and looks great

  • Actually ABS not ABC 😁 (always bring squirtbottle) or (antilock braking system)

  • Next time you see someone squirting on their car, hmu

  • Is this “heated charge port” not kinda similar for all the cars with the charge port more towards the back of the car and more or less integrated in the body? ID.3? EQC? The frozen CP probiem is mainly with the charge ports really up front? Like Kia? Hyundai? MG? Or is it really Tesla Magic? 🤗

    • Almost all cars have the air exhaust in the rear. When you think of it the blower sucks air in from outside. So the air has to go somewhere. In many cars there are holes in the chassis with plastic or rubber flaps. They are the air output. So this is just Tesla wisdom to use the waste air to keep the charge port deiced.

  • This also explains why it felt colder sleeping in a Tesla than those German cars, it's losing heat through the back side of the vehicle. Not hatin', just pointing it out.

    • All cars lose heat out of the back of the car otherwise the fan wouldn’t be able to draw in new fresh air. Cars are leaky by design.

  • I love Tesla. But why do they still have these stupid door handles? I'm not a fan..

  • Björn, you are great! Thanks for the update. I do not have problems with the door handles, more with the windows not going down, that is a nuisance.

  • You should remove the other video. It will still pop up for a lot of users and many will believe Tesla is not working in winter.

  • a Flir camera view was missing this time. to show the boosted hot air escaping

  • The app should implement a feature to open the doors / simulating a door button press from the inside.

  • Let me just open the door with my app in case I have a frozen handle?

    • @Fabian Knutti I know, but the idea is that like when you press the button to open the door from inside, it opens the door just enough for me to use my fingers to open the door without using the handle

    • You can unlock from the app but that's not opening it.

  • Why does recirculation cause it to not work? Can someone explain the physics?

    • @Peter Helm can you explain it like I’m 5?

    • There is no overpressure in the car with recirculation, because the fan sucks the air out of the cabin. Without recirculation the air is blown in the cabin, the pressure rises and due to the pressure in the cabin, the air will escape through the openings of the cabin.

  • too easy? It's easy if it doesn't require extra effort. Tesla should have designed the door handles to operate better in cold climates and there is no excuse for not heating the charge port door or at least offer a cold weather package that addresses all these issues.

  • First think on my mind yesterday, watching on my phone: recirculating pushing hot air outside, on vents (designed or not)? Hey!? I noticed, Bjorn, you are not the most technical guy, but, anyway... (Side note: that doesn't diminished your great input on electrified vehicles world). Now I can comment... :) I had an old car... really old, like 80th: always felt the air flow around the handles when trying to open the doors in winter with full heating (max blower speed) and no gloves. Tesla should insulate the best it can everything; then implement some designed pinpointed defrosting feature - you don't need to heat all the car, also you don't need to wait no time to open your car - emergencies always appear. You can in fact program your (EV?) Tesla to keep access not frozen.

  • Yeah I'm not going to try to warm up my windshield with my hand. It's -35 outside right now. I wish Tesla didn't make their door handles and windows (without frames) like this. The charging port should also just be like a regular fuel door

    • You could lick the windscreen. 🤣

  • I usually pre heat with the “max” option in those situations

  • Would be nice if the doors could be electrically opened by the app

  • This is a somewhat inaccurate video because it gives the impression that you have to pre heat the car to get in. I just brute force, push hard with your palm and the handles will go out. Same with charge port. Just give it some open palm smacks and it opens. Absolutely no scratch and I dont even have fancy coating (just a waste of money imho). Cheers, wrote this on my m3 in -9 in Sweden. (yt app works great)

  • The newest "sheeeeeet" in EDM "WIPE IT! WIPE IT! 🤣 For real now, somebody should make a song of this. Maby Mc Hammer?! 😁 Top video Bjorn. Verry useful hacks.👍

  • A hand warmer could probably do the trick and they're easy to have in a pocket. Click the metal dish inside and the crystalization starts and generate heat.

  • Bjorn is the best!! He won't let go of something unless it's confirmed 100% and precise!! Much respect brother!!

  • The difference between science and just fooling around is writing it down - Mythbusters.

  • One off the reasons I bought Audi A4 instead of A5 is because it didn't have the frameless windows. I don't like this trend at all.

  • Thank you for doing another test!

  • Ohh I was told to spray seems etc with silicone / WD40 spray and it stops this.....It seems to help in UK but can't test with the level of cold you have!!!

  • My shitty old car has none of these issues...

  • the problem are the windows

  • “That’s enough squirting... now we wait until tomorrow morning”😂

  • “frozen door handle challenge” 😂 f’ing brilliant.

  • You can pee on the charge port when you havnt warm water :P Nice video

  • Thanks Bjorn, I appreciate your dedication.

  • Is there a heated charge port in 2021 Model Y and Model 3? The side mirror heating can be activated in Long Range and Performance Models by activating the rear windshield heating. Also available in the App. Would this also activate the charge port heating? Or is there a separate charge port heating control in the Model Y app? Google search finds the following: "Charge Port Inlet Heater: Your car can now use the charge port inlet heater to help defrost the inside of the charge port. The charge port inlet heater can be activated in cold ambient temperatures by enabling preconditioning using the mobile app, activating the rear defrost button on the vehicle's touchscreen, or preconditioning the vehicle using scheduled departure."

  • Which PPF is that? It looks awesome with that metallic look.

  • Thickest ice shields are built when cars are covered in several centimeters of snow while parked in a sunny spot. During daylight the sun slowly melts the snow. During night the remaining snow slush can freeze again and build a solid ice cover.

    • then you'd have to preheat for long I guess... but as long as the car is heating from the inside... the ice will slide off/open even if the outer layer is still frozen.

    • Freezing rain can also coat everything from trees to cars in a thick coating of ice. wikipedia.org/wiki/Freezing_rain

  • Hey, any way to fix heat issues when its minus 30 degrees CELCUIS? I leave it on auto HI and usually 23 auto but it fogs the windows and the heat barely comes out. 2020 Model 3 performance

  • Most important part of this video is at 11:16 when Bjørn turns off air recirculation to ensure that cold air is sucked into the cabin and heated air is pressed out through tiny gaps near door handles and charge port.

  • Use a rubber hot water bottle on areas that are frozen then while driving put on lap warm hands

  • Usually ppl are not squirting on their car at night - yeah, they squirt IN their cars ;)

  • If my handle is frozen, I just put my palm on it for 5-10 seconds and then the problem is gone

  • will never happen with a XC40 r

    • a car made to be used in snow... and tesla a car made in sunny california

  • When there is ice I always press the small end of the handle first. It breaks the ice.

  • Close your eyes from 2:20 and let your imagination run wild.

    • I want it to freeze over

    • LMAO!! Usually people are not squirting at night, let me change hands

  • In France we had a frozen night -15°Celcius I sprayed yesterday on the chargeport and the door lock W40, and I was able this morning to open the doors and the chargeport

    • @Sophie Lichten Many brands, but for example CRC silicone pro.

    • @Tero Piispala What product do you use?

    • @Sophie Lichten I've been preparing my cars for a winter for over 30 years and silicone based products work best. I also know that many plastics get fragile from penetrating solvent based oils like wd40.

    • @Tero Piispala Maman Electric produced a video regarding preparing model 3 for winter

    • I wouldn't put such oil on plastic but there silicon and teflon sprays designed for that purpose

  • Maybe to prepare the parts with silicon spray may prevent freezing.

  • Frameless doors (windows) are still stupid..

  • Great tips, thanks Bjorn.

  • We won't have to worry about this soon, as it won't freeze anywhere due to global warming

    • @riDDimann depends on how bad it gets

    • It's probably a joke, but "global warming" doesn't mean everywhere gets warmer, just the global average temperature increases.

  • Nice video bjorn

  • Pee on charge port it is frosen ;) works very well :D

  • How can you start preheating at a specific time from the app?
